Staying on Course in Sedona

By Marie King | As seen on Sedona.biz

A few months ago, I had the chance to get a job that paid an excellent hourly wage, but the work didn’t interest me.  I really felt torn about whether I should accept the position because I could have used the money.  I asked a friend what he thought I should do.  He responded with a question, “Why did you move to Sedona?”

I knew that I had moved from Boston to Sedona so I could develop the kind of creative lifestyle that I wasn’t able to pursue in my nine-to-five world in Massachusetts.

The hourly job I was considering would have put me back into that nine-to-five world and closed the door on the creative vision that I have for my life.

Sedona is unique in that people are often times called to live here for a specific purpose.  Sometimes that purpose is to be the artist or the healer.  Sometimes the reason is to get out of the goal driven rat race they are living in.  But with life's daily pressures, holding on to that vision is not always easy.

Ironically, it is sometimes easier to do what you don’t want to do with your life than to follow your life's calling.  I know it would have been simpler for me to take that job than pursue the creative path that I am on.

Here are some things we can do to stay on track with the vision of the life we want:

1. Stay Centered.  If you do not already have practices in place to keep you centered, put some in place.  I write in my journal and go for a walk each day to stay balanced.  Others I know hike, do yoga or meditate.  It doesn’t matter what your centering practices are just be faithful to them.
2.  Fill your mind with positive ideas that heighten your resolve to remain on your spiritual/creative path.  I have just read Callings by Gregg LeVoy, which is about following your path.  I occasionally read excerpts from The Prophet by Kahlil Gibran or listen to CD’s by Caroline Myss, author of Sacred Contracts.
3.    Create a sacred space in your environment.  That may be a small altar or just statues or pictures that remind you of your spiritual/creative goals.
4. Surround yourself with people who support your goals.  It’s easy to attract naysayers who can find fault with your aspirations.  Seek out positive people who help you move towards your vision rather than away from it.
5.  Find a spiritual/creative mentor.  What you want to find is someone who has been down the path you want to travel and can give you guidance.  Meet with that person as regularly as you can, so that when you encounter pitfalls you have help dealing with them.

Martha Graham said, “There is vitality, a life force, an energy, a quickening that is translated through you into action, and because there is only one of you in all time, this expression is unique.  And if you block it, it will never exist through any other medium and will be lost.”

Hang on to that life force and make it your mission to translate it into action each day.
