New team to lead Sedona Red Rock High School

By Marie King | As seen on Sedona.biz

(Sedona, Arizona) - At the end of this school year Russ Snider, the Principal of the Sedona Red Rock High School, will retire.

He will be replaced by David Lykins, the current Associate Principal of the High School.

Dr. Lisa Hirsch, Director of Teaching and Learning, will add the role of Associate Principal to her current duties.

David Lykins will not officially take over as principal until July 1st.  However, he is already beginning to take the lead role especially in the area of hiring new faculty for the upcoming school year.

As he looks down the road, Lykins will focus on three distinct areas:  student achievement, school safety, and the school's climate.

Student achievement is not only David Lykins’ top focus but also that of Dr. Kim Randall, Superintendent of Sedona-Oak Creek Joint Unified School District, of which Red Rock High School is a part.

Dr. Randall wants the new leadership team at the high school to place a heavy emphasis on “What is being taught? How is it being taught?  And what is the rate of student learning?”

The Superintendent’s approach, which she refers to as back building, looks at the end result and determines what steps need to be taken to achieve that outcome.  The emphasis overall will be on developing higher level thinking skills not only at a high school level but also school wide starting in kindergarten.

The current Associate Principal sees school safety in terms of having students feel safe and nurtured.  He feels that this can be engendered through the leadership of the principal and the caring of the teachers.

David Lykins' view of the school’s climate includes the students, faculty and parents and how collectively they create an environment that is stimulating, a good place to be and a place where learning is occurring.

The leadership team at Sedona Red Rock High School is changing, but the priorities seem to be staying the same, which is to give the students the best possible education.
